Building a business can be overwhelming. There is always so much to do in the beginning. You are so excited and anxious, but also may be frustrated because it’s TAKING TOO LONG! If you are anything like me, patience is not a virtue you were granted. Most entrepreneurs are that way – it’s part of our make up!

If you have figured out what your passion is and how to turn it into profit, you are definitely on the road of entrepreneurship. It’s a lot of fun and very exciting, but it’s also a crucial time for establishing the foundations of your business. Early on in my career I learned to protect my business building time. It’s probably the most important tip I learned when I was building my business.

You can’t build your every minute of every day. No matter how passionate you are about your business…you will get burnt out quickly if you try. You can protect your time. With time management and discipline you’ll see success much quicker.

Protecting your time starts with having a business plan that outlines what you are trying to accomplish. Hopefully you’ve written one by now but if not, it’s definitely something that you need in order to move forward with your business..

Your plan is your road-map. Now you just have to see how far you can travel each day in order to meet your goals. It’s like taking a trip. If you are driving cross country, most likely you will have plotted out stopping points along the route or know that you will drive about 500 miles each day.

You need to do the same in your business. Schedule your “business time” just like you would a date with your best friend. Know where to go or what task to accomplish, what to bring or have available, and definitively how long you’ll be there, etc. It’s simple, really (note: I didn’t say easy!).

Setting an appointment with yourself means sticking to that appointment, no matter what. I know it’s hard to say NO to family time or friends events, but if you truly want to build a business FAST, you will have to make short-term sacrifices in order to have long-term gains.

Schedule your business planning…schedule your networking time…schedule your social media time…schedule your potty time (just kidding, but you get the point!). Protect your business building time and you will get there faster!
